How To Treat a Crick In the Neck

A crick or spasming in the neck muscles can be temporary or chronic. It is often painless but can be connected to chronic neck or shoulder pain. This neck feeling of stiffness makes the patient feel less mobile than usual. Many people who develop a crick in their neck also have neck pain. This is because a crick in the neck is often due to muscle injuries. The most common sensations associated with a crick in the neck include:

  • Stiffness in the neck or near the neck
  • Stiffness in or near the upper shoulder blade
  • Difficulty moving the neck in a particular direction
  • A popping or clicking sensation sound when the person moves their neck

The most common causes of the crick in the neck include:

  • Muscle injury or tension due to sitting or sleeping in awkward positions
  • Muscle spasms
  • Muscle weakness
  • Sprains and Strains
  • Poor posture

Other times people can undergo a whiplash type injury where the neck is flexed and extended causing injury to the ligaments and muscles. The most common cause of neck symptoms include a sedentary lifestyle along with longer periods spent sitting in front of a computer or looking at electronic devices. In some cases, neck stiffness can be caused by an underlying medical problem, such as a herniated disc, fracture, arthritis, or spinal stenosis. Other conditions which are rare include heart attacks and strokes. Usually these types of conditions will have other medical symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, and intense headaches or confusion. It is always best to undergo an evaluation of your neck or back to make sure your condition is of muscle or ligament origin.
