Most Common Causes of Neck Pain
The most common causes of neck pain are strains and sprains of the muscle and ligament. These conditions usually heal within a few days to a few weeks. A strain occurs when a muscle or tendon has been irritated by overuse or over-extension. Common causes of neck strains and sprains include:
- Sleeping in the wrong position.
- A sports injury where the neck is suddenly moved in an unusual way.
- Poor posture whether you're at home or at work. Poor posture can lead to neck problems if a person's head is tilted or rotated to one side for longer periods of time. The most common activities are working at a computer, reading a book, watching tv, gardening, etc.
- Repetitive motions, which include turning the head in a manner from side to side, such as dancing or swimming.
Over doing physical activities may lead to overuse of the neck muscles, tendons, and ligaments which can lead to neck strain. A whiplash injury is where the head and neck are forced suddenly backward and immediately forward due to a great deal of force. Soft tissues around the spine can be partially torn or ruptured as a result of this injury. This type of injury commonly occurs in an auto accident that involves a rear end collision.
If your neck symptoms continue to go on for longer than two weeks you should consider an evaluation by a qualified health care professional.
