Tips for a Healthier Back:

  • Hydration - Plenty of fluids help the entire body function better but it also has a special importance for the spine. The discs of the spine are made up largely of water and keeping yourself well hydrated keeps your discs hydrated as well. This increase in hydration allows the spine to be more flexible in its movement.
  • Vegetables - Foods that are great sources of magnesium and calcium help as key minerals in keeping bones strong and strengthening back muscles. Eating a wide range of foods helps your body get the needed vitamins and minerals. It is always good practice to start having more leafy green vegetables, seeds, whole grains, and avocados. In addition to providing needed vitamins and minerals, the leafy vegetables and grains will help maintain a better weight which is healthier for the back.
  • Nutrition - Nutritional supplements can provide key nutrients for the spine. Calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D are all key nutrients in bone health which helps prevent osteoporosis. Calcium rich foods as well as supplements can be helpful in maintaining a good source of calcium.
  • Watch What You Drink - Drinking cola and other carbonated beverages can make it tougher for your body to absorb the needed calcium and magnesium and maintaining bone strength. Alcohol can limit your body's ability to absorb calcium so drinking in moderation or not drinking at all is your best bet for your back.
