Back Safety Tips While Gardening

Getting outside gardening can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors, beautify the community, and get physical activity. Whether you are a beginner or expert gardener back and health safety should always be a priority.

Gear up to protect yourself while you are outside:

  • Utilize proper lifting techniques to protect your back, neck, and shoulders
  • Wear safety goggles and proper clothing to prevent injury when using types of tools and equipment
  • Wear gloves to lower your risk of skin irritations, cuts, and contaminants
  • Protect your hearing when using machinery
  • Use sunscreen or long sleeves to lower your risk of sunburn and skin cancer

Enjoying the benefits of physical activity by doing some active stretches for your neck, arms, and back. Do some exercise walking for a few weeks prior to beginning your gardening season to condition your body. These activities will help raise your breathing and heat rate and strengthen muscles.

In order prevent neck or back injury vary your gardening activities and manage your time for an hour a day and spread it over a week's time. Care should be taken so as not to overdo lifting and bending. If you do have heavier work to do, get help from a friend or family member so you do not injure your neck or back.
