Sources of Whiplash

Sources of Whiplash

When the neck is subject to a whiplash type injury there is usually a combination of factors that contribute to whiplash pain. The types of injuries that can occur are falls and other traumas like car accidents. Any type of motion that causes a flexion and extension of the neck can cause potential injury and damage to the ligaments and muscles of the neck.

The chiropractic treatment of whiplash pain maintains a "holistic" view of the patient's whiplash pain.

It primarily focuses on:

  • Muscle Dysfunction
  • Joint Dysfunction
  • Improper Movement Patterns
  • Possible Disc Injury

Joint dysfunction from whiplash occurs when one or more joints of the spine loses its normal joint play and shock absorption capabilities. This is detected through a motion palpation technique in which the chiropractor gently moves the joint in different directions to assess where the patient is at as far as joint play. When there is dysfunction in the joint, the normal range of motion may be affected to show a decreased range of motion and often times there is associated pain. Joint dysfunction can lead to muscle imbalance and pain causing a vicious pain cycle. Loss of joint play can cause abnormal signals in the nervous system. Muscles related to the cervical spine joints can subsequently become tense and become under active causing a restriction in range of motion. The resulting muscle imbalance can place increased stresses on the joint aggravating the joint dysfunction that already exists.

When joint dysfunction develops muscles are affected. Some muscles respond by becoming tense and over active while others respond by becoming under active and inhibited. These muscles can develop trigger points which they need chiropractic treatment involving muscle relaxation or stimulation. Trigger points are areas of congestion within the muscles where toxins and inflammation accumulate. An injured muscle can also send abnormal neurologic signals into the nervous system which can cause a disruption in the ability of a nervous system to properly regulate muscles. This can in turn develop faulty movement patterns. Faulty movement patterns of the spine can cause increase in strain in the muscles and joints leading to both neck and back pain.
