In the last decade, yoga is becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Initially, yoga is an ancient practice developed in India approximately 4,000 years ago. Yoga classes consist of a combination of physical and breathing type exercises along with meditation. One of the key benefits of yoga that has been used for thousands of years is to promote health and prevent disease.

Many people with neck and back problems have found that yoga provides benefits, including relieving pain, increasing flexibility and strength,  and allowing for relaxation. Yoga can often times help with many types of neck and back pain however no one treatment works for everyone. Many aspects of yoga make it ideal for treating neck and back pain. The breathing and meditation aspects of yoga include a relaxation response and this response has been found in many studies to assist people in decreasing their levels of pain. Yoga has been found to be helpful in the treatment of depression and anxiety that often accompany individuals with chronic pain problems. Most yoga poses can be modified for beginners so that everyone can do a version of the poses. Yoga is more than just a set of exercises to increase flexibility. Other skills are needed for different yoga poses such as strength, balance, attention, and concentration.

Yoga can be safe for almost everyone but depending upon your individual medical condition certain poses may need to be modified or avoided. Be sure to check with your health care practitioner to see if this is the right form of exercise for you.
