Is your iPad or iPhone being a literal pain in the neck? Most likely the answer is yes. Persistent pain in the neck and upper shoulders caused by slouching, bending in extreme positions, or using tablets, phones, and computers is a growing problem among Americans. Ipads/iPhones at times is usually associated with sitting without back support, such as a bench or on the ground, and slumping over with your shoulders rolled forward. This condition is more prevalent among young adults than old adults. Many people will more likely experience musculo skeletal symptoms with prolonged use of time. Those people of neck and shoulder pain or previous injuries to the neck and shoulders are more susceptible to having this occur.

Such high prevalence of neck and shoulder symptoms especially among the younger populations presents a substantial burden to society. The most frequent reported symptoms of over use of electronic devices was stiffness, soreness, aching between the neck and upper shoulder blade. These postures that lead these people to slump over and to gaze downward at their electronic device do cause these symptoms.

Preventing iPad/iPhone neck:

  • Sit in a chair with a back support and make a conscious effort to sit straight up with your shoulders and shoulder blades pulled backwards.
  • Use a stand or pillow to support arms when using these types of tablets and electronic devices
  • Take frequent breaks along with exercising to help strengthen the neck and shoulder muscles

Using these electronic devices is becoming more of a part of our modern lives. In order to reduce the risk of developing long term neck and shoulder problems we need to be aware of the ergonomics and posture of using electronic devices.
