Stand Up For Health

For many students and others in the work place, it may require sitting at a desk and often working on electronic devices and computers for longer stretches of time. There are negative effects of prolonged sitting, and may have been reported in numerous recent health studies. It is theorized that the slow down of blood flow and decreased metabolism occurs when we are seated for longer periods and allows for build up of fatty acids in the muscle tissue. Sitting at a desk for six to eight hours a day can result in an increased frequency of back or neck pain due to improper posture. Studies have shown that sedentary behavior is often linked to greater instances of poor health including, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and high level of cholesterol. So it is important to sit less and exercise more.

Try breaking up those periods of prolonged inactivity with increased activity. Get up whenever it is possible even short breaks spent from sitting can be beneficial. You can try to make it a habit when you are speaking on the phone to be standing and vary your activities to both sitting and standing. While at your desk, practice good posture by sitting evenly with both feet flat on the floor. Make sure your chair height is at the right elevation in relation to your desk. Raise or lower your computer monitor so you don't have a head tilt either upwards or downwards when you are viewing a screen. Incorporate stretching and strengthening exercises in your daily routine with the focus being on hips, shoulders, and back. Prolonged sitting can strain the lower back. Work on making your core muscles stronger so they are more capable of supporting your spine.
