Walking is low impact and can provide overall the most health and longevity benefits. Exercise walking is a great form of activity for people of all ages. In the United States, over 80 million Americans consider themselves regular walkers. Walking is second nature to most of us yet we have forgot how to walk properly. There are simple walking techniques that we can use to keep our body balanced and in good form.

There are a few simple ways to improve posture, minimize pain, and boost confidence when walking. Most people need to walk with proper alignment. Be mindful of your walking form while exercising. Having a great stride has good posture and purposeful movement to help with the hip flexors and back. To get the most out of your walk try to avoid any imbalances that can cause misalignment and joint pain. Follow the seven points of proper walking.

Proper Walking Techniques:

  • Look forward and not at the ground or your phone
  • Hold your head high
  • Your chin should be parallel to the ground
  • Move shoulders naturally and have your hands free to swing
  • Gently tighten your stomach muscles
  • Swing your arms freely with your elbows bent
  • Wear appropriate walking shoes so you can promote the normal walking of rolling your foot from heel to toe
