Could Sciatica Be the Cause of Pain In Your Hips & Buttock?

An ongoing pain in a person's buttock and hips can be a worrying and uncomfortable condition. If you or someone you know has this kind of discomfort it is recommended that you find the cause and you seek the right treatment. Most causes of hip and buttock pain do not lead to serious complications and may go away on their own, but in some incidences they are the underlying reason that needs treatment to relieve these symptoms. Sciatica is the most common cause of pain in the hips and buttock. Sciatica is not a condition in itself but a symptom of various conditions. The common causes of sciatica include a condition known as piriformis syndrome. This is where the piriformis muscle is overworked or over injured and causes pressure on the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs down from the lower spine  to the buttocks and the back of the thigh. Typically, sciatic pain is accompanied by numbness and tingling and they are worsen if someone sits or does too much physical activity. A herniated disc can also cause sciatic pain and this is usually in the lower lumbar spine. Sciatic pain typically happens in people in their forties and fifties.

A muscle strain is another common cause of buttock pain. The muscles in the buttocks are known as the gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, and gluteus maximus. If a person overstretches, lifts, or pulls these muscles groups pain often times occurs in this area. Signs of muscle strain include tenderness, swelling, stiffness, and difficulty moving the hip joint and muscle.

Another cause of buttock and sciatic pain is degenerative disc disease. As people age, the discs in the lower back become weaker and worn down. As this condition happens the cushioning affect that the disc provides become less effective. The spinal bones in the lumbar spine begin to rub together and put pressure on the nerves in the area. This often times causes pain in the buttocks, thighs, as well as tingling into the legs. Typically, symptoms may worsen when a person is sitting for prolonged periods, lifting, or bending.
