Healthy Backpack Tips

As the summer nears to a close, students begin preparing for the new school year. Make sure that the students in your life choose the right backpack and use it correctly.

Backpacks that are carried improperly or overloaded can cause back, neck, and shoulder pain. Students often times sling their backpacks over one shoulder leading to postural imbalances trying to counterbalance the weight. This leaning forward or hunching the shoulders puts extra stress on the spine and shoulders and contributes to poor posture, fatigue, and eventual pain.

When shopping for a backpack be sure to select the one that is the proper size for the individual. Backpacks made of light weight materials featuring a wide padded shoulder strap and padded back are often the best ones to utilize. Also a backpack with a waist strap and multiple compartments can help distribute the weight more evenly across one's body.

  • Use both shoulder straps and the waist belt
  • Adjust the backpack to sit correctly on the back
  • Load heavier items closest to the back
  • Lighten your load and don't carry unnecessary items
